Dry July: How to Unwind Without Reaching for a Drink

July's here, and across the country thousands of Australians are going alcohol-free for the month. Since 2008, Dry July has inspired more than 347,000 people to take the challenge, raising over $90 million for people affected by cancer. It's a brilliant cause — and for many, a genuinely good reset. But there's a catch most people don't expect: when the after-work wine disappears, so does their main way to switch off. Inhale. Exhale. Let's talk about a better one.

It's not the drink — it's the wind-down

For a lot of us, a drink isn't really about the alcohol. It's the full stop at the end of a long day — the signal to the nervous system that it's finally time to relax. And with 81% of Australian workers battling stress and burnout (University of Melbourne, 2023), that release valve matters.

The irony is that alcohol isn't actually very good at the job. The Dry July Foundation itself points to better sleep and more energy as two of the biggest rewards of a month off the booze — a sign of just how much alcohol quietly disrupts our rest. The good news: the calm you're chasing is still very much available. It just doesn't come in a glass.

Float therapy: the ultimate switch-off

Float Therapy is about as close as you can get to pressing pause on the world. Floating effortlessly in a private, open pool filled with 400kg of Epsom salts — heated to skin temperature, with light and sound removed — your nervous system finally gets the space to settle. It's shown to lower stress and support deeper, more restful sleep: the exact things Dry July is helping you reclaim.

It's the perfect Dry July ritual — a way to genuinely decompress that leaves you clearer the next morning, not foggier.

Warm up and let go: sauna and massage

If your wind-down is more about warmth and physical release, you've got options:

  • Infrared Sauna — deep, calming heat that melts away tension and gives you a quiet moment entirely to yourself.

  • Massage — releases the physical knots that stress leaves behind and resets both body and mind.

Make it your Dry July ritual

This July, try swapping the Friday-night drink for a different kind of reward — an hour that's calm, private and genuinely yours. Our Cave Club makes a regular reset the most affordable way to look after yourself all month long. And if a mate is taking on the challenge, a City Cave session is a thoughtful way to cheer them on.

Your antidote to stress is closer than you think

However you like to unwind, we've got a calm, private space ready for you — centres right across Australia.

Find your nearest centre and inhale, exhale.
